'Commentary'—an expression of opinions or an offering of explanations concerning an event or situation—covers a multitude of sins by nature of its definition. Opinions sprout like mushrooms after a critical event. Social media has given us the false impression that we're all experts on a topic simply because we've learned how to 'Google It'. Artists often use their craft for political expression, adding their own visual opinions to the mix. Which is what you'll find here, whether I'm serious or seriously tongue in cheek.
EYES WITHOUT A FACE
The inspiration for this piece came from hearing the Billy Idol song of the same name and I thought, 'how apropos for 2020'. Which will go down in history as the year noses, mouths and smiles became a mystery. This piece isn't mean to express an agreement or disagreement with mask mandates, I just portray things as I observe them. Eyes is part of my 2020 Vision series highlighting year 2020 in my usual acerbic wit.
FACE WITHOUT A MASK
Also called Naked Face, she is so taboo 2020. Where it was a serious scandal to show up anywhere in public without the face holster. When one commits a serious health and social faux pas it goes on permanent record, yet Naked Face is completely defiant in her non-compliance. She's another piece of my 2020 Vision series which express a very unprecedented time in history.
COVID TAKES A VACAY
Another piece in my 2020 Vision series and another 2020 observation: while protests and societal meltdowns were happening at the height of the pandemic, the COVID bug would accommodatingly take a hiatus (unless it was a right-wing super-spreader biker party). And where would you find that cheeky bug? Sitting poolside sipping on a beer of the same name, watching the chaos unfold on a 70 inch screen.
Ah 2020, where everyone developed an unhealthy (pun intended) fear of cooties. But I've always loved Cooties, their hard plastic body parts in shiny primary colors. A favorite childhood game that inspired this image, with a 2020 twist. And how dare those bugs stick out their tongues at the first rule of superbug survival.
LOVE IS A MANY CLICHÉD THING
'It's not you, it's me'
'I don't deserve you'
'We've grown apart'
'I need time to find myself'
'We can still be friends'.
Whether you've heard those words, or said them yourself, your relation with another has become as cliche as this image. Not meant to trivialize the seriousness of heartbreak, but our penchant for drama often trumps the actual heartbreak. Turn, instead, to no truer cliche: time dulls all wounds.
NEVER TOO TIRED FOR COCKTAILS
We are a drinking society. Whether a beer after a hard day's work, Happy Hour imbibing, ice-breaker at a business deal, or wine amongst friends. Some can imbibe until the wee hours of the night and still convince themselves they're never too tired for a cocktail if the opportunity presents itself. A lot of the ills of society have been created, or solved, with such liquid refreshment. Depends on one's viewpoint.
